Report from the Education, Training and Research AUGIS Summer 2019 Newsletter 8 AUGIS AHP and CNS Committee Report I have now been in post for almost 8 months as lead on the Executive council for clinical services, audit and corporate sponsorship. It has been an interesting period of time, including the fact that I have had 3 operations as an NHS patient in that time. This has given me a fascinating insight into the range of emotions our patients go through before during and after surgery and has definitely altered some aspects of my clinical practice. It has also demonstrated to me the vast array of dedicated support staff that back up and complement our surgical practice. From the clinical services perspective we are intending to review all the AUGIS clinical services documents in Autumn 2019 following the annual conference in Liverpool. The aim is to update the benign conditions guidelines later this year and the cancer guidelines during 2020. It is our intention to produce a timetable for revision of these documents with the leads for HPB, Bariatrics, OG cancer and benign upper GI surgery and involve as many council and non-council AUGIS members as possible in these reviews. The NOGCA and BOMSS audits are continuing to collect data and the feasibility of securing funding for a national HPB audit, possibly looking at resection rates for colorectal liver metastases, will be discussed at the AUGIS executive committee meeting in July. I will hopefully be able to provide an update for you by the time we meet in September. Ihavealsobeentaskedwiththefurtherdevelopmentofourcurrentstrategicpartnershipswithindustry.Thesponsorship which arises from our ongoing relationship, particularly of our annual meeting, provides a vital income stream which allows the cost of membership and attendance at the meeting, to be kept to a minimum. We have attempted to attract many more industry partners to participate in this year’s Liverpool meeting and, as well as the traditional tiered levels of financial support, we have also introduced sponsored talks and sessions. In addition we are pushing ahead with our programme of trainee and emergency surgery focussed AUGIS meetings delivered at regional level. There have been several recent examples of successful meetings in Trent, Yorkshire and the South West, plus a very popular joint meeting with the Association of Coloproctology in the North West. That only leaves me to wish you all a great summer 2019 and I hope that you all have the chance to get away for a relaxing holiday. I will hopefully be making my way to Pembrokeshire in July and the Isle of Arran in August, as long as I have managed to shed my crutches by that point. It would be great to see as many members as possible in Liverpool in September for what promises to be an excellent annual meeting. Iain Cameron Lead for Clinical Services, Audit and Corporate Partnership Mr Iain Cameron Report from Clinical Services, Audit and Corporate Lead AUGIS Summer 2019 Newsletter 9 UGI CNS Macmillan Team Leader Queen Elizabeth Hospital Foundation Trust , Birmingham Since joining AUGIS in 2018, I have progressed from member of AUGIS, to regional representative for the West Midlands and also sit on the NOGCA Clinical Trials committee as CNS representative. Over this period of time the AHP/ CNS committee have been successful in nominating key individuals into regional representative posts. The overall aim originally was to try and get a CNS and a dietician as representatives for each region. We did manage this for some regions but not for all. As we are awaiting the new Geographical divisions from AUGIS, we cannot finalize the list of representatives and any vacancies that exist until then. We have also been successful in producing our mission statement. The Committee experienced and enjoyed a successful CNS/AHP event at the AUGIS Conference 2018, which had positive feedback overall for the Conference. Due to the Conference App and the feedback sheets, it was difficult to extrapolate exact AHP/CNS session feedback. The Committee have taken the feedback on board in preparation for this year’s event. We welcome the feedbackaswecanonlylearnfromthis for successful future event planning and implementation. However we are in communication with the Committee and council members to see if we can improve the feedback sheets and App for more specific AHP/CNS session/day feedback. Current feedback sheets address the whole conference as a whole, so results were a little misleading. We understand this is being addressed for the AUGIS Liverpool Conference in September. The AUGIS CNS/AHP Committee have had regular meetings throughout the year, which have been successful as we have included teleconferencing for members who cannot always attend. At the moment our current focus of the meetings are to nominate regional representatives for all regions, to increase the AHP/ CNS membership and consolidate the current Committee’s position. Another focus of the committee is to work closely with the AUGIS Council, to help increase overall membership and recruitment. This will cover membership and vacancies in regional representation. The AHP/CNS Committee representatives recognise the importance of increasing AUGIS membership. In order to do this, the Committees message to potential members needs to be not only enticing, but also powerful and motivating. Our mission statement will hopefully achieve this. The profile of AUGIS AHP/CNS membership and its benefits need to be raised. We are in the process of putting ideas forward for the new AUGIS website, which is in progress and sounds exciting. The website development may take a bit of time to ensure that it embraces all the requirements of the council and members. The website needs to be a platform for all existing AUGIS Members and to be inviting to any potential members. There are lots of exciting things happening for AUGIS and the benefits for members are comparable with other societies. This is a short newsletter report, but the next one will be longer as we will have achieved much more and hopefully we will have recruited into some of our regional representative vacancies. Bernadette Fairley Co-Chair AUGIS CNS/AHP Committee I would like to encourage you to attend the AUGIS meeting this year, which is being held in the fantastic city of Liverpool from 25th – 27th September 2019. The CNS/AHP programme will be held during the Wednesday AM session starting at 10.30am to allow for travel time. Our theme this year is “Assessment”, starting with an overview of how to assess and support a patient throughout their cancer journey from a clinical psychologist, followed by a very topical presentation on the assessment of frailty and the development of an upper GI/HPB Pre- operative frailty service delivered by a geriatrician. Finally, the morning ends with an assessment of a newly appointed CNS and dietician, exploring their expectations versus reality. I do hope you can join us for what looks to be an exciting programme and promises to be another successful AUGIS meeting. Please can you share this with all members of your team to raise awareness of this session and encourage attendance and membership of AUGIS.
