Update from Mary O’Kane BOMSS Nurse Report from Jenny Abraham and Jeremy Gilbert) Since the previous bulletin in December 2018, we met in January 2019 at the BOMSS conference in Belfast. We briefly discussed a proposed survey for nurses. Jeremy and the team have developed a questionnaire to explore the educational requirements of bariatric nurses. This short questionnaire was circulated to all BOMSS members. If you were unable to complete this questionnaire or did not receive the link please see below: https://www.surveymonkey.co.uk/r/VCPJL8C The results will be analysed in due course. If you are a bariatric nurse and require support please contact us: Jeremy.Gilbert1@nhs.net.uk; Jenny. abraham@uhcw.nhs.uk FREE Adult Obesity module This free Adult Obesity module is available by registering with Health Education England (HEE) e-Learning for Healthcare (HEE e-LfH) who work with Public Health England (PHE) to develop a series of new free e-learning sessions to improve the knowledge, confidence and skills of health and care professionals in preventing illness, protecting health and promoting wellbeing. Visit: www.e-lfh.org.uk/programmes/all-our-health/ The new interactive e-learning sessions, called “All Our Health”, offer bite-sized information on a range of key public health issues that health and care professionals may face. This is a valuable learning resource for health professionals and includes many other topics. Any problems with access please go to the support site at http://support.e-lfh.org. uk/. Psychological support for patients before and after bariatric surgery - update from Prof Jane Ogden, Dr Denise Ratcliffe and Dr Vanessa Snowdon-Carr In the summer of 2017 BOMSS asked us to write guidelines for psychological support for patients before and after surgery. These guidelines are now complete and under review in an academic journal. We have also produced a short position statement and flow chart which is available from the BOMSS website at: http://www.bomss.org.uk/ wp-content/uploads/2019/06/BOMSS-brief-position- statement-psychology-for-website.pdf The guidelines are considered a living document and are attached to an interaction blog. Therefore, any feedback and suggestions are welcome. Please do start to use these guidelines to structure and frame psychological services across the NHS and private sector. BOMSS nutritional guidelines update – Mary O’Kane Work is still continuing on the update. We are in the process of reviewing the literature so that we can rate the quality of the evidence and grade the recommendations. Given the wide range of nutrients covered by the update, this part is taking longer than we anticipated. We will aim to have them completed in the near future. Professor Andrew Goddard, RCP president, said: “It is important to the health of the nation that we remove the stigma associated with obesity. It is not a lifestyle choice caused by individual greed but a disease caused by health inequalities, genetic influences and social factors. It is governments, not individuals, which can have an impact on the food environment through regulation and taxation, and by controlling availability and affordability. Governments can also promote physical activity by ensuring that facilities are available to local communities, and through legislation and public health initiatives”.
